Electrolysis is the most cost effective method for volume production of Magnesium. A high DC current is passed through a Magnesium Chloride solution in a closed cell at a temperature of around 700C. The chlorine gas given off by this electrolysis is recovered for re-use. The remaining Magnesium can then be easily extracted. Modern magnesium process technology utilizes current approaching 350kA to achieve significant improvements in current efficiency while maintaining environmental compliance.
